Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by
bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
More than a decade after it was identified as a global health emergency,
tuberculosis remains one of the world's leading infectious causes of death among adults.
About one-third of the world's population, or two billion people, carry TB bacteria,
although most never develop active TB disease. The disease has been
on the rise since the 1980s.

Treatment is long and complex.
First-line treatments used today were developed 50 years ago.
Patients have to follow a daily treatment for 6 to 8 months which is cumbersome
and therefore likely to be interrupted if no support system is in place.
At the same time, it is crucial to follow the treatment to completion in
order to make sure it is effective and to avoid the development of
drug resistance. This may lead to a new episode of sickness or
even to death.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis mostly attacks the lungs,
however it can also attack many parts of the body
such as the kidney, the lymph nodes, and the spine.

tuberculosis or bone tuberculosis. The symptoms associated with these diseases are
hectic fever, night sweating, tiredness, poor appetite, cough and hemoptysis.
